GWEA 2006
International Symposium on
Impact Evaluation of Global Warming and Approach to Risk Analysis in East Asia

October 31 - November 4, 2006 To be held at Central Weather Bureau, Taiwan (R.O.C.)

The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) Third Assessment Report showed that the average air temperature has risen by 0.6 ℃ since the beginning of the 20th century. It also stated that the trend of increasing temperature during the last 50 years could be attributed mainly to human activities. Furthermore, the air temperature is expected to increase on average by another 1.5 ℃ to 4.8 ℃ by the end of this century. These findings suggested that immediate measures should be taken against global warming problems and that the establishment of prediction methods and the development of mitigation technologies were important issues.
In recent years, many studies on the evaluation of the impact of global warming and the measures to counter the situation have been carried out, providing some knowledge of each process. However, mechanisms of phenomena under the influence of interaction of multiple processes have yet to be solved. In addition, researches identifying negative effects likely causing global warming and providing measures to minimize the impact of warming in the future are needed. In terms of research methodologies, it is essential to improve the precision of the climate change scenario based on the regional approach.
In this context, the international symposium focuses on (1) characterization of climate changes and development of climate change scenario for East Asia, (2) studying effects of climate change on the ecosystems and food production, (3) effects on human health and society, and (4) evaluation of risks regarding global warming, to visualize impact of global warming in the near future and examine risks of the effects. As a consequence, when the situation of East Asia becomes well-defined, a wealth of new knowledge will be attained regarding the climate change impacts at a level that would prevent the area from anthropogenic interference, which is the ultimate goal in the international framework of the global warming study.
